Abstract

Rice field rat infestations (Rattus argentiventer) are one of the main factors contributing to declining rice productivity in Pengabuan Village, Abab Subdistrict, Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir (PALI) District. The explosion in the rat population in recent planting seasons shows that conventional control methods, particularly the use of synthetic anticoagulant-based rodenticides, are no longer effective due to resistance and bait aversion. This study aims to strengthen farmers' capacity in rat pest control through an integrated approach that includes extension, the use of biological agents, mechanical control, and training in the manufacture of a plant-based rodenticide called Bioyoso, which uses gadung tubers (Dioscorea hispida) as the active ingredient. The activities were carried out in coordination with Field Agricultural Extension Workers (PPL), farmer groups, field observations, rat ecology extension, and demonstrations on the production of Bioyoso. The results of the activities showed an increase in farmers' knowledge and skills related to environmentally friendly control alternatives and increased participation of farmer groups. Bioyoso is considered a potential plant-based rodenticide because its raw materials are easily obtained, low cost, and have an effective toxic mechanism. Overall, this program shows that combining educational outreach and practical training in the production of botanical rodenticides can be a more sustainable rat control strategy while reducing dependence on synthetic chemicals. These findings recommend expanding training and ongoing assistance to ensure optimal adoption of the technology at the farmer level.
